Starting ABA is a big step, and it is completely normal to have questions. You may be wondering what ABA is, how long it will take, what it will cost, or what your role will be. We are here to walk beside you through all of it.

Most importantly, we want you to know that the goal of ABA is never to change your child into a different person. Our goal is to understand who they are, celebrate their strengths, and help them build skills that make everyday life easier, safer, and more joyful.

What Is ABA?

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It is a type of therapy that helps individuals learn through play, practice, encouragement, and everyday experiences.

Depending on your child’s needs, ABA may help them:

  • Communicate what they want and need
  • Handle waiting, changes, or hard moments
  • Build play, safety, and daily living skills
  • Become more independent
  • Find safer ways to express big feelings
  • Connect with others in ways that are meaningful to them

Your child’s goals will be created just for them. There is no one-size-fits-all ABA plan.

What ABA Is, and What It Is Not

ABA should feel safe, caring, and respectful. It is never about punishment, forcing a child to “fit in,” or taking away the things that make them unique.

We will follow your child’s interests, pay attention to their comfort, and take time to build trust. Breaks, choices, and your child’s voice will shape what sessions look like.

Meet Your Child’s Team

Your child’s team will usually include a BCBA and an RBT.

A BCBA, or Board Certified Behavior Analyst, leads your child’s care. They will get to know your child and family, create your child’s goals, review progress, guide the care team, and meet with you regularly.

An RBT, or Registered Behavior Technician, often works directly with your child during sessions. They may play with your child, practice skills, help with routines, and support communication. The RBT follows the plan created by the BCBA and receives ongoing guidance and training.

What Do Sessions Look Like?

Sessions may happen at home, at school when approved, in the community, or through telehealth.

At home, learning may happen during play, meals, getting dressed, completing routines, or spending time with family. At school, the team may help your child with communication, transitions, participation, safety, and independence.

Sessions should not feel like hours of sitting at a table. Children often learn best when they feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

How Long Will ABA Take?

Every child’s path is different. The number of hours your child receives each week (and how long they remain in ABA) will depend completely on their needs, goals, progress, family schedule, and insurance approval.

After getting to know your child, the BCBA will talk with you about what level of support may be most helpful. Your child’s progress will be reviewed often, and their plan may change as they learn and grow.

There is no “standard” timeline. We take things one step at a time, and celebrate every bit of progress along the way.

What Will ABA Cost?

The cost of ABA depends on your insurance plan. Some families have little or no cost, while others may have a copay, coinsurance, or deductible.

We know insurance can feel confusing. Our team will check your benefits, explain what we learn clearly, and help you understand your expected costs. If you have questions at any point, we are always here to help.

You Are Part of the Team

You know your child better than anyone. Your ideas, questions, and concerns are a very important part of their care.

We will ask you to join regular caregiver meetings, share what you are seeing at home, and practice helpful strategies during everyday life. You do not need to have all the answers; we will be here to listen, guide you, and help you feel confident supporting your child along the way.

We are here to learn together, celebrate progress together, and work through hard moments together.

Moving Forward Together

Progress can happen in big and small ways: a new word, a calmer transition, asking for help, trying something new, or completing one more part of a routine.

Every step matters, and every step is worth celebrating.

You are not starting this journey alone. Our team is here to listen, answer your questions, and help your child grow in a way that feels meaningful for your whole family.
